This Weekend in Somerville: Riverfest

A look at weekend events in and around Somerville

Riverfest 2013 at Assembly Row
The sixth annual Riverfest, which takes place Saturday, will have a fresh feel this year because it's taking place in the newly opened Baxter State Park. The festival includes eight food trucks, ten live bands, a handmade arts market, games, inflatable amusements, a photo booth, face painting, balloon artists and magicians. The whole event culminates in a fireworks display. It takes place in Assembly Square, along the Mystic River in front of the new Assembly Row development. Although smaller in size—it's about 6.1 acres—Baxter State Park gives Somerville a taste of the sort of riverfront property that folks in Boston and Cambridge enjoy along the Charles River. Riverfest is from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the fireworks begin at around 8 p.m.

Perennial and House Plant Sale
The Somerville Garden club will be selling indoor and outdoor plants, horticultural books, decorative containers, garden tools and other stuff at its annual plant sale in Davis Square. It's from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the intersection of Holland Street and College Avenue.

Harvard Book Store Warehouse Weekends: Local Flavors
Harvard Book Store—probably one of the best independent bookstores in the country—is opening its Somerville warehouse on Saturday and Sunday to let local bookworms browse through 25,000 rare, used and remainder books. But that's not all. Local food producers, such as Q's Nuts and Nobscot Artisan Cheese, will be on hand to provide sustenance so you can continue shopping for books. It's from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 14 Park St.

Sidekick Soccer Academy: "KICK with Care"
Kick with Care, run by a Somerville soccer coach, gives children with special needs and children who may experience shyness and anxiety the chance to play soccer in a recreational and leisurely atmosphere. The program is also for adults with disabilities. The season has already begun, but there's rolling admission. It's Saturday in Assembly Square's Draw Seven Park, 85 Foley St., at 12 p.m.

The Charles River Food Truck Festival
If you like food trucks, head across the Charles River into Brighton, where about 23 food trucks will participate in the festival. It's Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Artesani Park, 1255 Soldiers Field Rd.
