This Weekend in Somerville: Boston Ice Cream Takedown

Going Green on Route 16, the smallest museum in the world, bee counting, kids Shakespeare and a midnight movie are also happening in Somerville this weekend.

Boston Ice Cream Takedown
Home chefs from around Boston will compete to the death—okay, not to the death, but for prizes—with their ice cream recipes. Ice cream lovers will be able to sample as much ice cream as they can shove down their gullets. The takedown is Sunday at The Center for Arts at the Armory from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. You can get tickets here. (Now I can't get the image of a fight to the death using ice cream out of my mind. It's horrifying and electrifying at the same time. You'd think suffocation would be the main cause of death, but actually it's forced brain freeze. Disturbing.)

Mµseum: The Smallest Museum in the World
If you didn't make it to the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Micro Museum on Thursday, the smallest museum in the world—it's 10 inches by 16 inches by 8 inches—will be showing it's inaugural exhibit, "Invisible Cities," through Oct. 11. This weekend will be a good time to check it out. The museum is solar powered and open to the public 24 hours a day. You can see the museum and its exhibit at 72½ Union Square, between The Independent and Subway.

Going Green on Route 16
As part of SomerStreets, a series of street festivals in the summer, Route 16 will be closed down on Sunday for "Going Green on Route 16." There will be live entertainment, food, curious creatures, free swimming at Dilboy Pool, mini golf and lots of other fun activities. It's Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Route 16 (Alewife Brook Parkway), between Broadway and Dilboy Stadium.

Race to the Row
The first ever Race to the Row, a 5K in Assembly Square, takes place in Sunday. It's organized by the Somerville Road Runners, and there's also a children's run race-day registration, though it's cheaper to register by Friday. Learn more here.

Great Bee Count Day
Join San Francisco State University’s Great Sunflower Project Saturday by counting bees. That's right, go outside and count bees, then report your findings at www.greatsunflower.org. With the whole bee crisis thing, data can help. You can get some more information and practice at greatsunflower.org/user/register.

Midnight Movie: The Road Warrior
"The Road Warrior," a 1981 film, also known as Mad Max 2, starring Mel Gibson as he navigates a brutal, post-apocalyptic world, is the midnight movie at Somerville Theatre. It shows Saturday night.

Youthquake Theater presents "A Midsummer Night's Dream"
The premise behind Youthquake Theater is, "Let's do Hamlet in the backyard." The performances are organized and performed by children and teens. The performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" takes place Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Somerville Community Growing Center. Learn more at youthquaketheater.com.

Growing Center Volunteer Orientation
Speaking of the Somerville Community Growing Center, which offers programs for kids, cultural events and other outdoor happenings, if you're interested in volunteering to help keep the Growing Center running, there's a volunteer orientation at 10 a.m. Saturday. It's at the Growing Center, 22 Vinal Ave., and you can email volunteercgc@gmail.com to register.
