Monday Essentials: National Poetry Slam

A Chilean cooking class, home-grown fruits, vegetables and herbs, an outdoor movie and a bee count are on the agenda in Somerville over the next week.

National Poetry Slam
The National Poetry Slam, featuring 72 poetry teams from around the United States and Canada, kicks off in Somerville, Cambridge and Boston on Tuesday. The first night of competition takes place at Johnny D's and other locations at 7 p.m. Check out the National Poetry Slam website for the full schedule.

Nibble Cooking Class: Chilean Eats with Eduardo Lagos
Chef Eduardo Lagos will teach you how to make three Chilean classics: empanadas, ensalada chilena, and mote con huesillo, a summertime drink made with dried peaches and fresh-cooked husked wheat. It's part of the Nibble Cooking Class series, and it's at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kitchen, Inc. 201 Somerville Ave.

Gardener's Bounty at the Somerville Garden Club
You'll get to sample home-grown vegetables, fruit and herbs at this month's Somerville Garden Club meeting. It's Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Tufts Administration Building, 167 Holland St.

"So I Married an Axe Murderer"
The 1993 comedy staring Mike Myers screens outdoors on Thursday night at Seven Hills Park, behind the MBTA station in Davis Square. It's part of SomerMovie Fest.

Great Bee Count
People around the country will be counting bees on Saturday. It's part of San Francisco State University’s Great Sunflower Project. They're asking people to count bees and upload their results at www.greatsunflower.org.
