Monday Essentials: City Election on Tuesday, Boston Comedy Festival

A look at the upcoming week in Somerville.

City Election
Somerville holds a city election on Tuesday, one with important implications about the direction of city government. After Tuesday's election, there will be at least four new members of the Somerville Board of Aldermen, and as many as nine new members (the Board has 11 members). These are folks who approve the city's budget and tax rate, oversee zoning and large real estate development, write local laws and make decisions about things ranging from outdoor concert permits to multimillion dollar bond issuances. Likewise, the Somerville School Committee will have between three and four new members. Visit our election guide to learn more about the candidates, and don't forget to vote on Tuesday.

Boston Comedy Festival
The Boston Comedy Festival begins Friday, and most of the action is happening in Somerville. Some big-name national comics will be in town. Check out the schedule here.

Chamber of Commerce Dinner and Awards
The 67th Annual Dinner & Powderhouse Awards takes place Wednesday at the Holiday Inn, 30 Washington St. The reception begins at 6:30 p.m., and dinner begins at 7:30 p.m. Visit somervillechamber.org for more information.

Planning Board
The Planning Board meets Thursday at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

Weather
Sunny with a high around 43.
