SOMERVILLE, MA, April 24, 2014 – Last fall, the Somerville Police Department welcomed nine new officers into it’s midst. Many female candidates for the nine open positions, but only one made it through the training: Cassandra Goncalves.
“Cassandra was actually the only one that made it through the entire process, and that speaks volumes for the type of person that she is,” said Deputy Chief Michael S. Cabral, who participated in the recruitment process.
“It’s always something that I’ve known I wanted. I can’t really pinpoint a reason,” Goncalves told the Somerville Neighborhood News. “When something goes wrong, you’re the person that responds. You’re the person that helps people.”

Goncalves credits her parents – immigrants from Portugal – for working hard to assure she got a good education and was taught the right values at home.
“I was the first generation of my family to be born here,” she said.

The new officers are “diverse, they speak a second language, most of them,” Cabral noted. “They’ve really developed into fine young officers.”
