Porter Square Books Gets Grant for New Program for Young Readers

Thanks to a generous grant, Porter Square Books will soon be giving every young reader a free book when they participate in a childrens author event.

Best-selling authotr James Patterson recently decided to donate $1 million to support independent bookstores with grants ranging from $2,000 to $15,000. Porter Square Books will use its grant for its childrens events. 

“We’re willing to offer books to any age kids, from pre-school through high school,” childrens book buyer Carol Stoltz told Somerville Neighborhood News.

The most important thing is community, and that’s really what we try to reach out and connect with all kinds of organizations, and schools, and libraries, and to make this place a place also where people meet and greet and can be entertained”

Roxane Scrima, a kindergarten teacher at the Kennedy School, said the gift of an autographed book is makes a big impact on a child.

“To be able to go home and bring a book home that they actually saw and met the author,” hits them “right in the heart,” Scrima said. “It really goes right to the heart for these kids. It's not just a book that we're reading, but ‘I met that person.’”

“This will definitely give us an opportunity to provide books for all children, not just the children that can afford to purchase the books,” she added.
