SHS Ecology Students Welcome Mass Audubon Society Guests

Ms. McCabe's Somerville High School Ecology class recently welcomed two guest speakers from the Massachusetts Audubon Society as part of their Urban Ecology unit.  Matthew Kamm, a Conservation Scientist with Mass Audubon spoke with students about birds commonly found in Somerville.  He also talked about his work studying Kestrel nesting habitat in Massachusetts.  The American Kestrel is also known as "North America's littlest falcon."  Debbie Stein, a Naturalist with Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary, brought a screech owl and a red-tailed hawk to class, giving students a first-hand look at these incredible birds-of-prey.  Students learned about adaptations of the birds, and about current conservation efforts in Massachusetts.
