How Do You Get Relief From Whiplash?

Whiplash is a generic term for when the head and neck are whipped in one direction and then another.  This whipping action takes place in milliseconds, and is practically impossible to stop once the action begins.

The most common cause of whiplash is from a car accident, but it can also occur from falls, sports injuries, work injuries and other incidents.

Whiplash injuries most often result in a sprain strain of the neck.  If the ligaments in your neck are stretched or torn this is called a sprain.  When the muscles and tendons get stretched this is called a strain.  And to make matters worse the bones in your neck all connect to each other via joints, and these can also become damaged.

Symptoms of a whiplash injury can occur instantly or it may take several days or weeks to show up.  If you're involved in an accident and you need medical care you should go to the hospital immediately.

Long lasting effects of a whiplash injury are common.  The best way to minimize the effects of a whiplash injury is to take measures to best protect you, your spine and your car.

Here's several things that you should do immediately,

  • Use your headrests, put them in their highest position.
  • Wear your seat belts and insist that all passengers do as well.
  • If you are aware of an impending collision try and keep your head and neck looking straight ahead.
  • Brace yourself if you can
  • Stay alert and keep at least two car lengths in front of you.
  • Avoid unnecessary commotion inside your vehicle.
  • Do NOT TEXT and DRIVE.

Injuries can hurt.  They can also have serious long term effects or possibly permanent damage so please drive save and follow these tips.

Over the past 26 years I have treated thousands of car accident injury victims.  Call me today if you've been in a recent motor vehicle accident for a thorough examination.  This will determine if you are a candidate for chiropractic care.
