Somerville Kindergarten Teacher Advises White House

Catherine Tighe discussed evaluation reform, assessments and early education, according reports.

Healey School kindergarten teacher Catherine Tighe traveled to the White House over the past week to meet with senior education officials in the Obama Administration, according to Boston.com.

The news website says Tighe was joined by a teacher from Roxbury's Orchard Gardens K-8 Pilot School and teachers from Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Indianapolis, Memphis and Chicago.

They met with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on Monday and then met senior education advisors at the White House, Boston.com reported.

They traveled with Boston-based Teach Plus and talked with Washington officials about evaluation reform, assessments, early education and other topics, according to Teach Plus.

In a statement released by the organization, Tighe said, "Identifying the right assessments is critical, both for our students’ learning and for how our effectiveness as teachers is evaluated."

She also said, "We need assessment systems that honor authentic learning, developmentally appropriate practice, and high quality instruction."
