Somerville High To Honor 'Mr. Murph' Friday Night

Lorne Murphy spent 30 years with the boys basketball program and served as a friend and counselor.

Somerville High School will honor Lorne A. Murphy Friday night before the boys varsity basketball game.

Murphy, known as "Mr. Murph," spent 30 years with the Somerville High School boys basketball program, and after retiring from coaching, he served as a locker room security attendant at the high school, according to an announcement from Somerville Public Schools.

It says Mr. Murph left a legacy as a "friend, coach father/grandfather figure, counselor [and] confidant."

Murphy, who served in the Army during WWII, passed away on May 25, 2012, the announcement says.

The high school will honor Mr. Murph before the Friday-night game against Malden. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.

After the game, friends, family and alumni will gather at On the Hill Tavern in Magoun Square to celebrate.
