Somerville High Is One of State's Top 15 'Dreamschools'

Boston.com says Somerville High School ranks among Belmont High and Brookline High when certain criteria are taken into account.

Somerville High School was listed as one of the top 15 "Dreamschools" in Massachusetts by Boston.com.

The ranking, part of the news website's Dreamschool project, took six criteria into consideration, according to Boston.com.

It looked at MCAS math growth, MCAS English growth, school climate, college readiness, school resources and diversity.

When all those things were weighted equally, Somerville High School was 13th on the list of top 15 public high schools in the state.

Somerville High School ranked higher than Belmont High School and Bedford High School, but lower than schools like Cambridge Rindge and Latin and Boston Latin.

Of course, for most families, not all criteria are the same. Some may be interested MCAS math scores, some in college readiness and some in diversity.

For instance, when it comes to diversity, Somerville High School did well, ranking number 14 in the state.

In other areas, Somerville High School lagged behind: 44 percent of students had four-year college plans, compared to 92 percent in Belmont. In another comparison, 68.7 of Somerville students scored a 3, 4 or 5 on AP tests, compared to 94.1 percent in Belmont.

News that Somerville High School was a top-15 "Dreamschool" came a few weeks after the school saw marked improvements in MCAS achievements.
