PHA was founded in 1996 by a diverse group of community members with the mission to prepare each student for success in college, to inspire a lifelong love of learning, and to foster responsible citizenship.
The K-12 school is located on three campuses in Somerville and Cambridge and serves nearly 1,200 students from diverse racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. 68% of the students come from low-income families as defined by federal guidelines. 87% are from minority backgrounds. Admission to PHA is non-discriminatory (lottery-based) and open to all Massachusetts residents with preference given to Somerville and Cambridge residents.

Prospect Hill Academy nearly doubles its students’ prospects of attending college. 95% of PHA graduates matriculate to four year colleges, the majority being the first in their families to do so. This compares to an average 51% matriculation rate in the top four districts where its students reside. PHA has earned a Silver Medal ranking by U.S. News & World Report for three consecutive award cycles, placing it among the top 7% of all American high schools. In 2012, PHA was designated a Level 1 school by the MA Department of Education, a distinction earned by the top 25% school districts in the state.
PHA also takes its commitment to responsible citizenship seriously by engaging students in school-wide community service days, in Enrichment Term, a three-week service learning project where students form partnerships with local organizations to address a community need, and in Junior Journey, a three week cultural and language immersion and service learning experience in Guatemala.
