Former Peace Corps Leader Named Assistant Principal of Healey School

Frederick McClelland comes to the Somerville school system after serving as an assistant principal in Westport and serving in the Peace Corps in Paraguay.

Frederick McClelland, who recently served as assistant principal at Westport Middle School and spent three years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay, is the new assistant principal at the , according to an announcement from Somerville Public Schools.

In addition to serving as assistant principal at Westport Middle School, McClelland was the special education department coordinator, the announcement says.

He began his teaching career in 2000 at Edison McNair Academy in East Palo Alto, Calif., heading the English language arts department there and ultimately becoming assistant principal and school operations manager, according to the announcement.

From 2008 to 2011, McClelland served in the United States Peace Corps in Paraguay, where he trained Ministry of Education officials and served as a professor of literacy and classroom management, the announcement says.

He earned a bachelor's degree in English literature at University of New Hampshire and a master's degree in educational leadership and administration from George Washington University, according to the announcement.

"He brings excellent experience as an educator and leader to the Healey School, as well as a wealth of knowledge in working with a diverse urban student population," said Somerville Public Schools Tony Pierantozzi in a statement.
