Former Middlesex DA to Review Somerville Field Trip Policies

Gerry Leone will chair a committee that arose after this summer's alleged sexual assault involving high school students. Community members may apply to be on the committee.

In the wake of an alleged sexual assault involving Somerville High School students at a school-sponsored sports camp, the city has hired former Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone to review the public school system's overnight and field-trip policies, according to an announcement from Somerville Public Schools

The announcement says Leone, now an attorney with Nixon Peabody, will chair the School Safety and Security Review Committee, which will make recommendations to the Somerville School Committee and schools superintendent about planning, running and supervising school trips.

In a statement released with the announcement, Leone said, "I am pleased to chair and collaborate with Somerville's School Safety and Security Review Committee as we assess the present policies and practices of the public schools, to continue the city's ongoing commitment to providing a healthy, safe and secure environment for students."

The review committee will consist of 10 to 15 members, and Leone will select members from "representative stakeholder groups," including Somerville Public Schools staff, students, parents, community members, health professionals and law enforcement professionals, the announcement says.

Anyone interested in being on the committee should download this statement of interest form and send it, along with a current resume (optional) to smorgan@k12.somerville.ma.us or to the following address:
