Letter: Richmond will bring new perspective in Ward 5 to Somerville School Committee

Somerville — Many people are talking about the Ward 5 School Committee Race between Ross Richmond and Laura Pitone. I am thrilled that as a community we are talking about education in Somerville. I think this discussion is great for our schools and our city.

After considering my choice, I have decided that I am most excited about the new perspective and experience Ross Richmond will bring to our School Committee. His experience comes from his job at the Massachusetts State House, specifically his work with early childhood education, the Higher Education Committee, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) policy initiatives. Our schools are improving and I believe Ross will continue to move them forward.

I believe Ross’ new perspective is inspiring for our school district; Laura’s time in the Healey School is a perspective we already have well represented on our current School Committee. Indeed, if Laura is elected we will have 5 out of 7 school committee members who come from the Healey School. With every issue, Ross is able to bring in a more focused understanding of how to use state resources to tackle local challenges for all our schools.
