Planning Board May Vote on Union Square Project Thursday

The Somerville Planning Board was scheduled to meet Thursday night and possibly vote on a controversial affordable housing proposal in Union Square.

The project, a partnership between the Somerville Community Corporation and Cathartes Private Investments, would build a total of 84 new apartment units at the sites of the former Boys & Girls Club and the Cota Struzziero McKenna Funeral Home. Of those, 45 would be affordable units, and the rest would be market-rate units.

The proposal has divided many in the neighborhood, some who say the project is too big, others who've cited the need for more affordable housing in Somerville.

Thursday's meeting was scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
