Zoning Change Would Expand Union Square's Commercial Corridor

Parcels around Market Basket and a vacant McGrath Highway gas station are part of the proposed zoning change.

The Somerville Planning Board is expected Thursday to hold a hearing about a proposed zoning change in Union Square that would expand the neighborhood's commercial corridor.

According to a meeting agenda, the proposed amendment to the zoning map would add more CCD-55 zoning to the area around Union Square and Prospect Hill.

CCD-55 stands for "corridor commercial district" with a building height limit of 55 feet.

The zoning amendment calls for changing the Union Square and Prospect Hill side of McGrath Highway, from Washington Street to Greenville Street, to CCD-55 zoning. This includes the vacant gas station along that part of McGrath Highway.

The zoning amendment would do the same thing to the south side of Somerville Avenue from Church Street to Dane Street—roughly speaking, around the area of Market Basket.

The proposed zoning amendment was submitted by Sunoco, Inc. and Kristco Realty, LLC, the agenda says.

The Planning Board will hold the public hearing at 6 p.m. at the Visiting Nurses Association, 259 Lowell St.

A report by the city's planning staff contains some more details.
