State Treasurer Steve Grossman, a Somerville Businessman, To Run for Governor

Grossman spent 35 years at the helm of Somerville's Grossman Marketing Group.

Steve Grossman, the Massachusetts state treasurer and former chairman of the Democratic National Committee who spent most of his career as head of Somerville's Grossman Marketing Group, plans to officially announce his run for governor soon.

Grossman will announce his decision to run at the Democratic state convention over the weekend, according to WSHM-TV, Springfield's CBS affiliate.

"I think it will be clear, at the Democratic state convention in Lowell this Saturday, that I am running for governor," Grossman told the TV station.

Grossman is a Newton native, but he spent 35 years as CEO of Somerville's Grossman Marketing Group, a strategic communications firm that evolved from the Mass. Envelope company, which was founded by his grandfather.

Another Democratic candidate who jumped into the governor's race Wednesday is State Sen. Dan Wolf of Harwich, according to Masslive.com. Donald Berwick, the former head of Medicare and Medicaid, has also said he's running, the news website says.

There's also speculation that Attorney General Martha Coakley might run, according to the Boston Globe.

An election to replace Gov. Deval Patrick, another Democrat, will take place in 2014.
