Somerville Alderman Candidate: Tony Lafuente

Tony Lafuente responds to questions about his background, Somerville and Ward 4's most important issues and why residents should vote for him.

What are the two most important issues facing Somerville and Ward 4 right now, and what would you do on the Board of Aldermen to address those issues?

The two most important issues facing Somerville and Ward 4 are the Green Line Extension and future Economic Growth in our city and neighborhoods.

If elected, I will join with my colleagues on the Board of Alderman in lobbying the state to fulfill its promises to Somerville. I will also work to ensure that the state hears our residents’ voices on this matter—and to bring them into the process. Somerville is united on this issue—and I will work hard to make sure Ward 4 resident are heard loud and clear.

We should examine the current commercial zoning code and bring it up to today’s standards. Somerville needs to attract vibrant small businesses for two reasons—to create jobs for our residents and to increase our commercial tax base, thereby reducing the tax burden on residents in Ward 4 and the entire city.

Tell us about your background

My family immigrated to the United States when I was nine years old. I moved to the Somerville area to attend Boston College. My parents were proud that I worked so hard to go to college. That’s why to this day, I still value the place a good education has in our society.

I moved my business [] into the Winter Hill home nearly 25 years ago, a business that still remains in Somerville today. Through hard work and some luck, it has grown to be a leader in the banner production industry. We are proud to have among our clients The Boston Bruins and The Boston Red Sox—as well as countless Somerville organizations.

I’m married to Helena—and have three wonderful children—Alicia, Andrew and Greg. My family has lived in Ward 4 for almost 25 years.

I have always been active in my community—from my time as Treasurer at St Ann Church & School to my involvement with groups such as SomerStreets, The Elizabeth Peabody House and Somerville Youth Boxing to name just a few! Win lose or draw on Tuesday, I’ll still be an active member of our city and neighborhood.

Why should Somerville residents vote for you?

I would ask Ward 4 voters to vote for me because I believe I have the commitment, knowledge and experience to fight for the issues that affect us all. I’m proud of the clean, respectful campaign I’ve run—and I think I am the best choice to represent you at City Hall.

I’m asking for your vote on Tuesday. If I’m elected, I promise to work my heart out for you.
