Should Somerville Ban Plastic Bags?

Cambridge is close to doing it. Brookline, Nantucket, Manchester-by-the-Sea and Great Barrington already have. Should Somerville be next?

On Thursday, Cambridge's city council moved one step closer to banning disposable plastic bags at retail establishments, according to Boston.com.

As the news website notes, Brookline has also banned plastic bags. Brookline's ban went into effect at the beginning of December.

Somerville, like Brookline, has banned polystyrene cups—a ban that will kick in this summer.

The proposed plastic-bag ban in Cambridge would require retailers to provide customers with recyclable paper bags or reusable bags, according to Boston.com. It says certain heavy-duty, durable plastic bags would also be allowed.

The news website notes that Nantucket also bans disposable plastic bags, and Manchester-by-the-Sea and Great Barrington have also passed bans.

Should Somerville be next?
