'Shape Up Somerville' Campaign Wins Recognition from Michelle Obama

The "Shape Up Somerville" campaign received recognition from First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" initiative and the National League of Cities.

According to announcements from the city of Somerville and the National League of Cities, "Shape Up Somerville," a program designed to diminish childhood obesity and improve the health of residents, received five medals from the National League of Cities for meeting goals laid out by "Let's Move."

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone received the recognition Thursday at a ceremony held in Boston. With 118 communities across the country participating in the "Let's Move, Cities, Towns and Counties" program, Somerville was one of 12 that received the highest standings in the medal count, according to an announcement from the National League of Cities, which is the leading organizer of the program.

Somerville received two gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals for meeting standards laid out by five specific goals, which you can read about here.

"Our work on core issues such as increasing access to fresh, wholesome foods and opportunities for physical activity has helped us to cultivate a healthier, happier, and more productive community,” said Somerville Mayor Curtatone in a statement about receiving the medals.
