Sen. DiDomenico Out of Somerville in Proposed Redistricting

If incumbents are re-elected, under new redistricting proposals, Sen. Pat Jehlen would represent all of Somerville; Rep. Tim Toomey would lose a Somerville precinct, and Rep. Carl Sciortino would gain a Somerville precinct.

According to draft redistricting maps, released Tuesday, state Sen. Sal DiDomenico would no longer represent Somerville in the state Senate.

DiDomenico currently represents a small sliver of Somerville: ward 1, precinct 1 and ward 2, precinct 1 in East Somerville. Those precincts would be added to Sen. Pat Jehlen's district. Under the proposed redistricting, Jehlen, if re-elected, would represent the entire city of Somerville in the state Senate.

The Massachusetts General Court's Special Joint Committee on Redistricting released the draft redistricting maps Tuesday for public comment. The maps outline proposed new legislative districts for the state House and Senate; they do not outline new congressional districts at the federal level.

Under the proposed redistricting, state Rep. Timothy Toomey, if re-elected, would lose a precinct in Somerville (ward 2, precinct 2). That precinct would be added to state Rep. Denise Provost's district.

State Rep. Carl Sciortino, if re-elected, would pick up a precinct in Somerville. Ward 4, precinct 3, currently in Provost's district, would be added to Sciortino's.

Somerville currently has three state representatives and two state senators. Under the new proposal, the city would maintain three representatives, but it would be represented by one senator.

The public has 14 days to make comments on the draft redistricting maps before the Special Joint Committee on Redistricting recommends the changes to the entire General Court (state legislature). The new districts would be in effect until 2022.
