See Which Candidates Are Moving onto the Final Election

Somerville's political season took shape after Tuesday's preliminary election.

A sitting alderman and a sitting alderman's son were eliminated from contention after Tuesday's preliminary election in Somerville. Meanwhile, some newcomers to Somerville politics were set to move onto the final election in November.

In Ward 1, Matthew McLaughlin and Elio LoRusso, both seeking a seat on the Board of Aldermen, will move onto the final election, according to unofficial election results.

In Ward 3, aldermen candidates Robert McWatters and Suzanne Bremer will move forward.

In Ward 5, Ross Richmond and Laura Pitone will vie for a seat on the School Committee.

A close race for second in Ward 1

In Ward 1, Alderman Maureen Bastardi missed moving onto the final election by just five votes. According to the unofficial results, Bastardi received 364 votes, coming in third. LoRusso received 369 votes, and McLaughlin came in first, with 504 votes.

Bastardi was appointed to the Somerville Board of Aldermen in December of 2012 when former Ward 1 Alderman William Roche stepped down. She had previously represented the ward on the School Committee.

Twenty-two votes make difference in Ward 3

In Ward 3, four candidates were looking to replace Thomas Taylor, who announced earlier this year he wasn't running for reelection after serving on the Board of Aldermen for more than 25 years.

It was a tight race for the top two slots. McWatters received 482 votes, according to the unofficial results. Bremer came in second with 409 votes. The top two finishers in each race move on.

Matthew Desmond, son of Alderman At-Large Bruce Desmond, came in third with 387 votes.

Stephen Delani finished fourth with 46 votes.

Laura Pitone Wins Big in Ward 5

In the Ward 5 race for School Committee, Pitone came in first with 678 votes. Richmond received 421 votes and will face Pitone in the final election.

Caroline Shea Rosas came in third with 145 votes.
