Park Near Union Square Reopens with Jan. 24 Ribbon Cutting

QUINCY STREET PARK REOPENS WITH RIBBON CUTTING JAN. 24th

Newly Renovated Park Incorporates New Trees and Plants, Benches, Walkways

SOMERVILLE – Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Ward 2 Alderman Maryann Heuston invite all interested community members to a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony celebrating the reopening of the Quincy Street Park on Thursday, January 24th from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. The ceremony marks the completion of extensive renovations at the open space on Quincy Street, located between Somerville Avenue and Summer Street just outside Union Square.  Refreshments will be served.

Designed by Weston Sampson Engineers and WANTED Landscape Architecture, renovations began in fall of 2012 and the park now incorporates three levels of planted terraces, a stepping stone path that incorporates recycled granite curb from the nearby Somerville Avenue reconstruction project, an Adirondack Chair seating area, and more. Materials for the durable, all-weather wood boardwalk were donated by the Eastman Company.    

“It’s great to have such an intimate and beautiful woodland space so near our urban center. In a densely populated urban community, our green and open spaces are extremely valuable, and we’re proud to continue to be able to renovate and add to those spaces citywide,” said Mayor Curtatone. “Spaces like these allow our residents to breathe freely and enjoy more social activities. These added amenities only make the experience that much more intimate and pleasant.”

“So far, we’ve had a pretty mild autumn and winter, and I’m hopeful that the weather will continue to allow residents to get out and enjoy this new and beautifully renovated open space earlier than even we anticipated,” said Alderman Heuston.   “This park has always been a neighborhood gem, tucked away in a residential area, but with the upgrades it’s received over the last few months, it shines a little brighter and provides more opportunities for residents of all ages to enjoy it, safely, year round.”
