North Street Veterans Playground Reconstruction to Begin

The West Somerville playground is getting a new design and more space, and it will be complete by early summer of 2014.

The reconstruction of North Street Veterans Playground in West Somerville is set to begin this week, according to an announcement from the city.

The reconstruction will be completed by early summer of 2014, the announcement says.

The new park design will feature a new playground, a multi-sport court area for basketball, street hockey, tennis and soccer, a water feature, cafe style seating, enhanced lighting and new landscaping. It will include security cameras.

The park will also be 4,500 square feet bigger than its current size, the announcement says, thanks to an easement onto Somerville Housing Authority property.

The reconstruction is being funded by a $400,000 grant from the state's Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities program, known as PARC, federal Community Development Block Grant funds and a $315,000 bond, according to the announcement.
