New Zoning Approved for Vacant Sunoco Site on McGrath Highway

The owner plans to build 48 units of housing with ground floor retail.

The Somerville Board of Aldermen Thursday approved new zoning for the vacant Sunoco parcel along the Prospect Hill side of McGrath Highway.

The change makes the area a CCD-45 zoning district. CCD stands for corridor commercial district, and 45 represents a 45-foot height restriction.

According to Richard DiGirolamo, an attorney representing the owner, the owner plans to build 48 units of housing on the site with ground-floor retail. DiGiralamo was not sure yet if the housing would be apartments or condos.

The proposal now has to go before the Somerville Planning Board for further approvals, he said.

Another rezoning proposal on the other side of Union Square—on Somerville Avenue near Market Basket—has not been brought to the full Somerville Board of Aldermen for approval.
