Meetings Planned to Create Vision for Powder House School

The meetings will "sketch out the vision" for redeveloping the Powder House School site.

Tufts University and the city of Somerville will be holding a series of public meetings about the upcoming redevelopment of the Powder House Community School outside Teele Square.

At the meetings, residents will work with city planners and Tufts officials "to sketch out the vision for the site," according to an announcement from the city of Somerville.

Here's the schedule for the meetings:

  • Jan. 13: Charette—a collaborative design session
  • Feb. 10: Community meeting
  • March 5: Charette follow-up
  • March 26: Wrap-up meeting
The announcement did not say when and where the meetings would take place, but Somerville Patch will post that information when it becomes available.

In August, an advisory committee, composed of neighbors, elected officials and members of the city's planning staff, decided Tufts University had presented the best option for redeveloping the school, which closed in 2004.

According to the announcement and the university's proposal, Tufts plans to combine the Powder House Community School site, at 1060 Broadway, with the Tufts Administration Building site, at 167 Holland St., to create one larger parcel. In doing so, it would create a large public green space spanning from Holland Street to Broadway. It would make upgrades to the current Tufts Administration Building and construct a new administrative building with underground parking at the location of the former school. Tufts is also proposing a third building that would contain either office space or unaffiliated residential units—both affordable and market rate.

According to the announcement, the city and Tufts University have signed an exclusive negotiating agreement "that sets the stage for the coming months of extensive public participation and feedback and for negotiation of a land disposition agreement."
