Gov. Patrick to Open Riverside Park in Somerville Wednesday

Baxter State Park, along the Mystic River in Assembly Square, has undergone a major renovation.

Baxter State Park, a 6.1 acre green space along the Mystic River in Assembly Square, will officially reopen on Wednesday.

Gov. Deval Patrick is expected to join Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone and representatives from Assembly Row and the Department of Conservation and Recreation to celebrate the opening.

The celebration, which takes place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., will also include a picnic, with hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream and music. The public is invited and encouraged to bring picnic blankets and baskets.

Federal Realty Investment Trust, the developers of Assembly Row, funded renovations of the state-owned park because it borders Assembly Row, and the real estate development is in many ways enhanced by the riverfront area.

The renovated park includes new walkways, landscaping and an amphitheater. The park has unobstructed views of the Mystic River, whereas before, views were blocked by overgrowth.
