East Somerville Gets Some Love on Monday

A ribbon-cutting, groundbreaking and walking tour will be capped off with refreshments from a new East Broadway restaurant.

The city is celebrating East Somerville Monday with two ceremonial events.

First, officials will conduct an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Chuckie Harris Park on Cross Street near the intersection of Broadway. The new park includes a children's play area, water features, an eating area with cafe tables, community gardens and 70 new trees.

Second, the city will hold a ground-breaking ceremony for the East Broadway reconstruction project, which began in fall of 2012. The $8 million project will include wider sidewalks, more trees, benches, improved lighting and crosswalks and better traffic signal phasing. The biggest change will be to narrow two lanes in each direction down to one. It should be complete in 2014.

Monday's festivities begin at 6 p.m. at the new Chuckie Harris Park. After the ceremonies Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone will lead a walking tour of East Broadway, and the tour will end up at the Somerville Public Library East Branch for refreshments provided by the new East End Grille.
