Davis Square Park Gets Facelift

Work on Kenney Park will be done in summer of 2014.

A park that serves as a gateway to Davis Square is getting a facelift.

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, Ward 6 Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz, members of the city's planning department and neighbors held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday for work being conducted at Kenney Park, at the corner of Highland Avenue and Grove Street.

When the work is done, in summer of 2014, the refurbished park will include a rebuilt basketball court, a water feature, moveable cafe seating and a spruced up play structure with a new rubber safety surface.

"This parcel is deceivingly large, and right in the heart of Davis Square," said Curtatone at the ceremony.

"It's really going to enliven this whole part of Davis Square," said Gewirtz.

The renovation costs $500,000, and design work was conducted by the city's planning department and CBA Landscape Architects.
