City To Host Lincoln Park Listening Session

Previous plans to rehabilitate the Union Square park led to an uproar from neighbors. They city is starting the planning process again by seeking community feedback.

Nearly a year after contentions public meetings led Somerville's mayor to announced a "reboot" of plans to rehabilitate Lincoln Park, the city is starting the planning process afresh with a "listening session."

The listening session will be held on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Argenziano School, according to an announcement from the city, and it will seek to "gather community input as we reexamine the renovation needs of Lincoln Park and the neighboring community."

Lincoln Park is located next to the school, just outside Union Square.

In 2012, the city announced plans to initiate a $2.7 million rehab of the park that would have included installing artificial turf, a field house and a seasonal ice rink.

Many neighbors balked at the plans, however, mostly objecting to the artificial turf. Some felt an artificial turf field would take away a plot of green space enjoyed by the neighborhood and convert it into a sports-only facility that neighbors wouldn't get to use. Youth sports advocates, however, pointed to the poor condition of the park, saying it was dangerous and that regular repairs took much-needed playing fields offline.
