Capuano Won't Run for Senate

The Somerville Democrat won't seek to replace Sen. John Kerry should Kerry become secretary of state.

Rep. Michael Capuano (D-Somerville) will not run for Senate if Sen. John Kerry is confirmed as President Obama's secretary of state.

According to Capuano's Facebook page, the congressman withdrew his name from the field of possible candidates. Here's what he posted:

Thank you for all of your good wishes. They have truly meant a great deal. After careful consideration, I have decided not to enter the race for US Senate. Instead, I look forward to focusing on the important issues facing the new Congress. My current work in the House and whatever opportunities the future may hold, afford me the greatest honor of my life; fighting for the Citizens of the Commonwealth.

Capuano, who has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1999, previously ran for Senate during the 2010 special election to fill the seat formerly occupied by Sen. Ted Kennedy, but he didn't make it past the primary.
