Capuano Will Not Run for Governor

The Somerville congressman said, "I will continue to be a strong voice for progressive policies in Washington."

Rep. Michael Capuano, a Somerville native and former mayor of the city, announced Thursday he would not run for governor.

Capuano had been considering a run for months.

The congressman posted a short statement about his decision on Facebook:

"After taking time to reflect with my family, I have decided that I will not be a candidate for Governor. I am truly touched by the support and encouragement I received throughout this process but believe I can best serve the Commonwealth in Congress. I will continue to be a strong voice for progressive policies in Washington."

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone has also been considering a run for governor, but he told the State House News Service earlier this week that he hadn't made up his mind yet.

Some political watchers suspected the potential Democratic contenders were waiting to see if Attorney General Martha Coakley would run before making their decisions. Coakley announced earlier this month she would run.
