Candidate Profile: Rebekah Gewirtz

Rebekah Gewirtz, Ward 6 candidate for Somerville Board of Aldermen, responds to three questions.

For Somerville Patch's 2013 election guide, we asked all candidates running for office in Somerville the same three questions, and we posted their answers without editing them. Here are the responses from Rebekah Gewirtz:

Question: What are the two most important issues facing Somerville right now, and what would you do on the Board of Aldermen to address those issues?

There are many important issues facing the city right now.  In particular, we are about to see the green line extension to Union Square, at long last!  We need to make sure we extend the line all the way out to Route 16.  The green line will further transform Somerville and make it even more walkable and accessible.  The other key issues in Somerville right now are development and zoning.  I am looking forward to passing the anti "Pay to Play" ordinance.  This will help make our development process more transparent and accountable to residents and neighbors.  I also am planning to pursue a "formula business" ordinance that would put stricter limits on chain stores entering our central business districts.  We need to preserve the quality of our squares, they should not be turned into outdoor chain malls.

Question: Tell us about your background.

I have served on the Board of Aldermen for eight years.  Before serving on the Board, I was a community organizer and worked with other committed activists to found the Progressive Democrats of Somerville, a group I chaired for several years.  I am proud PDS has made such a big impact in the city and has brought increased transparency and participation in local and state level government.  In my day job, I work for a social work association advocating for issues of social and economic justice on the state level, primarily.

Question: Why should Somerville residents vote for you?

I have been an independent, progressive voice on the Board of Aldermen.  I do my homework and bring a unique perspective to the Board, often asking questions that need voice.  I offer new ideas and am always looking for ways to improve the quality of life for residents.  For example, I authored the first in New England plastic bag recycling ordinance that requires stores of 5,000 sq feet or more to provide on site plastic bag recycling.  I also authored the Somerville tree preservation ordinance to protect our healthy public shade trees.  Currently, I am working with colleagues on ordinances to change the way aldermen vacancies are handled and to pass an anti "pay to play" ordinance.  I appreciate the support I have received from residents and neighbors in Ward 6 and throughout the city and look forward to continuing this important work.
