Candidate Profile: Matthew McLaughlin

Matthew McLaughlin, Ward 1 candidate for Somerville Board of Aldermen, responds to three questions.

For Somerville Patch's 2013 election guide, we asked all candidates running for office in Somerville the same three questions, and we posted their answers without editing them. Here are the responses from Matthew McLaughlin:

Question: What are the two most important issues facing Somerville right now, and what would you do on the Board of Aldermen to address those issues?

East Somerville has huge potential to be an engine for jobs and business. Assembly Square, Inner Belt Road and the Lower Broadway can reduce the burden of property tax, provide local jobs for Somerville residents, and make East Somerville a regional destination.  My first priority would be jobs for Somerville residents.  My second priority would be to ensure East Somerville does not lose the character that makes it unique.  We are a neighborhood of working families from all walks of life and the current residents are the ones I most want to represent.

Question: Tell us about your background.

I have a strong background in public service in Somerville. I grew up in Somerville with my three brothers, sister, parents and grandmother.  I graduated from Somerville High School.  I've been attending city meetings since I was thirteen. In 2003, I enlisted in the Army, serving two tours in Iraq and attaining the rank of sergeant. While still deployed, I remained close to Somerville issues. I co-founded Save Our Somerville, a non-profit dedicated to representing working families in Somerville, and served as its president.  Through SOS, we provided recreational activities for young people, and advocated for issues such as local jobs, parks and open space improvements, substance abuse treatment, and public transportation improvements. While volunteering for SOS I also received my degree in political science from Tufts University.  All of these efforts have culminated in what I believe to be a highly qualified candidacy for Ward One Alderman.

Question: Why should Somerville residents vote for you?

I believe I have successfully proven time and again my commitment to Somerville.  My entire adult life has been one of service to my country and my community.  I believe I am the best candidate for Ward One Alderman because I best understand how to make democracy work for everyone, not just the select few.  East Somerville is the most diverse neighborhood ethnically and economically and the ward alderman should work hard to look out for everyone's well being. I believe I offer a special kind of dedication and would work relentlessly for the people of ward one.
