Alderman and School Committee Candidates Make Video Pitches

Somerville voters in wards 1, 3 and 5, you'll want to check out this video of candidates running for office in your neighborhood.

It's a competitive year in Somerville city politics.

In wards 1 and 3, candidates vying for a seat on the Somerville Board of Aldermen will compete in a preliminary election, which takes place on Sept. 24.

School Committee candidates in Ward 5 will also participate in a preliminary election on that day.

In total, 10 candidates will participate in the Sept. 24 preliminary. The top two finishers in each ward will move onto the Nov. 5 final election.

All 10 candidates participated in a video produced by SCATV's "Greater Somerville." In the video, they each give a short pitch to voters, describing why you should vote for them. Each candidate had about 2 minutes and 15 seconds to talk.

If you're voting in the preliminary elections—and you are, aren't you?—you should check out the video. You can fast forward to the candidates in your ward.

Here's who participated:

In Ward 1

  • Maureen Bastardi (incumbent)
  • Elio LoRusso
  • Matthew McLaughlin
Ward 3
  • Suzanne W. Bremer
  • Stephen A. Delani
  • Matthew Desmond
  • Robert J. McWatters
Ward 5, for School Committee
  • Laura Pitone
  • Ross Richmond
  • Caroline Shea Rosas

You can watch the video above or here.

"Greater Somerville" will be producing more of these videos for candidates who will face off in the Nov. 5 final election.

In past years, "Greater Somerville" has hosted debates for candidates. Joe Lynch, host of the show, said this year, due to the number of candidates and time constraints, and in an effort to be fair to all candidates, the show decided to choose a different format, letting each candidate make a pitch directly to voters.
