Unlicensed Scooter Driver Discards Syringe in Front of Cop, Says Report

Police believe the syringe was filled with heroin.

A 34-year-old unlicensed Newton man drove the wrong way up a street and across the median of McGrath Highway in front of a cop, according to a police report.

Then, when the cop pulled him over, the man discarded a syringe filled with heroin, the report says.

It says an officer was stopped at the intersection of Broadway and McGrath Highway on Friday at about 11 p.m. when he saw Edward Kalisiak drive his scooter northbound on Edmunds Street, which is one-way in the other direction. Kalisiak then drove over the median of McGrath Highway, the report says.

As the officer pulled Kalisiak over, the scooter driver took his hand off the handlebar and discarded something by the side of the road, the report says.

Officers found the object, a syringe, which they believed was filled with heroin, according to the report.

Kalisiak was charged with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and drug possession.

He also received a citation for not using a Department of Transportation-approved helmet, the report says.

The above information was supplied by the Somerville Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.
