Friday Morning Bank Robbery in Davis Square

Update, 2 p.m., Aug. 3: Somerville police are seeking information on the identity of the bank robbery suspect. .

Update, 1 p.m., Aug. 3: Andrew Ravens, a spokesperson for Eastern Bank, speaking at about 12:40 p.m., said the branch is open again. He refered questions about Friday monring's incident to Somerville police, saying, "We have complete confidence in the Somerville police."

The Eastern Bank in Davis Square was robbed Friday morning, according to , a notification service that monitors police, fire and first-responder scanner transmissions.

According to the alert, the robbery happened shortly before 9:40 a.m. Police responded to a hold-up alarm, and the suspect fled toward Porter Square. The suspect was a white male, about five-feet, nine-inches tall, wearing a black sleeveless tank top, shorts and a pink and gray baseball cap. He had tattoos on both arms.

Somerville Patch has not been able to confirm the robbery thorough Somerville police and Eastern Bank.

That said, the branch, at 250 Elm St., was closed as of about 11 a.m. A man who answered the door when Somerville Patch knocked would not comment.

We spoke to a vice president at Eastern Bank, who said it is not policy to comment on alleged bank robberies. We also left a message with Eastern Bank's corporate communications office.

Somerville police have not returned a phone call as of this posting.

Eastern Bank in Davis Square sits between and , two restaurants that are closed in the mornings.

Across the street at , employees said they did not notice any police activity.

This same bank was . At the time, police and FBI agents arrested Morrison Avenue resident David Merrill and charged him with a number of bank robberies in the Davis Square area.
