Two Large Fires Strike Somerville Early Friday Morning

It's the second time in a week firefighters have had to battle two fires in the same morning.

Somerville firefighters responded to two separate fires early Friday morning. Both were two-alarm blazes.

According to Deputy Chief Patrick Sullivan, the first fire happened at 46 Belmont St., in Spring Hill, at around 3:30 a.m.

The second fire was at 27 Lake St., near Union Square, at about 5 a.m.

No occupants were injured in the fires, though some firefighters ended up with minor injuries, such as tweaked backs, Sullivan said.

According to the American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts, the Belmont Street fire affected four people and the Lake Street fire affected 13 people—10 adults and three children. The Red Cross provided emergency funds for food, clothing, and comfort kits, the aid organization said in an email.

Breaking News Network, which monitors emergency responder scanner transmissions, said there was heavy fire at both locations.

This is the second time in a week Somerville firefighters have had to battle two blazes, one after another, during the same morning. On July 12, two fires struck within half an hour of each near Union Square.

On Thursday morning, firefighters fought another fire near the Powder House Rotary.

Speaking Friday morning, Sullivan did not know the cause of Friday's fires or the extent of their damage. He said the fire investigator was assessing the incidents.
