Somerville Teen Offers People Ride With Stolen Cab, Says Report

The Boston taxi was stolen in Medford, and the cab company tracked its whereabouts with GPS, a police report says.

An unlicensed Somerville teenager with a stolen taxi cab tried to give a group of people a ride in it, according to a Somerville police report.

According to the report, a Boston cab was reported stolen in Medford, and on May 15 the taxi company was tracking its location with GPS.

A little before 4 p.m., the Somerville police dispatcher radioed that the cab was in the area of Mystic Avenue, and an officer found the car, filled with five people, in the parking lot of 472 Mystic Ave., according to the report.

When the officer approached the cab, the driver allegedly jumped out of the taxi, leaving the car running, hopped a fence and ran toward Temple Street.

The other four people in the car, also youth, stayed behind, the report says.

According to the report, the four young people were leaving a nearby store when the teen approached them and asked if they wanted a ride, and they had just gotten in the cab when the police officer arrived. The store owner confirmed this story, the according to the report.

Meanwhile, detectives chased the teen, a 17-year-old from the Ball Square neighborhood, onto Temple and Sydney streets, the report says.

According to the report, the teen hopped a barbed-wire fence near 422 Mystic Ave., cutting his hand, and was ultimately caught in a fenced-in area. Police had to call the to get the teen and a detective out of the area, the report says.

The teen was arrested and charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.
