Second-Floor Fire on Heath Street in Winter Hill Displaces Nine Residents

One man was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Fire investigators Tuesday afternoon were trying to determine the cause.

Somerville firefighters put out a fire at 82 Heath St. in Winter Hill Tuesday afternoon, and nine people were displaced by the incident, according to an email from Deputy Fire Chief Charles Breen of the Somerville Fire Department.

One man was transported to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, and the fire caused about $100,000 worth of damage, the email says.

Acting Deputy Dennis Murphy, speaking Tuesday afternoon on Heath Street, said the fire was mostly isolated to the front room of the apartment building's second floor. However, there was smoke and water damage to the first floor and basement, according to Breen's email.

82 Heath St. is part of a larger four-unit apartment building that shares a wall with 80 Heath St., and all four of apartments were determined uninhabitable, the email says. One of the residents of 80 Heath St., who did not want to be named, said, "The whole place is smokey" and "we cannot stay."

No one was injured in the fire. The resident treated for smoke inhalation had entered the building to rescue a pet, Murphy said.

Firefighters first responded to the fire at around 12:04 p.m., and on Tuesday afternoon the Somerville Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit was investigating the cause, which was not considered suspicious, according to the email.
