Police: Thief Hits Store Clerk with Phone, Steals Cigarettes, Loses Shoe, Gets Caught

Police arrested an East Boston man after an alleged botched robbery of a convenience store in East Somerville.

A 37-year-old East Boston man stole a pack of Newport cigarettes from an East Somerville market, claimed he had a gun, hit the store's clerk in the head with a phone, grabbed about $500 from the register, then lost the money and a shoe in his attempt to flee, according to allegations in a police report.

He was subsequently caught by police, the report says.

According to the report, Jonathan Sanchez walked into Alisson Market, at 46A Broadway, at around 10 p.m. on Jan. 28.

According to the victim's account, Sanchez stole the pack of cigarettes then asked the victim, who worked at the market, to make change for a $20 bill.
While the register was open, Sanchez put his hand under his shirt and said, "Give me the money, I have a gun," the victim told police, according to the report.

The victim told Sanchez he was going to call police, but Sanchez allegedly grabbed the phone and hit the victim in the head with it.

He then reached into the register and helped himself to a handful of cash, the report says.

However, the victim grabbed Sanchez, who dropped the money as he tried to flee, according to the report. The report says Sanchez also lost his left shoe.

When police arrived, they allegedly found Sanchez on Lincoln Street surrounded by a group of other men. Sanchez was breathing heavily, missing his left shoe and had a rip in his sweater, the report says.

Sanchez was arrested and charged with armed robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and witness intimidation.

Police were not able to find a handgun, the report says.

Please remember that allegations contained in police reports do not indicate a conviction.
