Police Report: Drunk Customer Goes Berserk in Union Square's El Potro Restaurant

A 33-year-old man allegedly tried to pick fights with customers and employees and broke into the restaurant after being locked out.

Police arrested a drunk customer who threatened customers and tried to start a fight with an employee at Union Square's El Potro Mexican Bar and Grill, according to allegations in a police report.

In doing so, the customer, 33-year-old Mario Rodriguez, of 184 Tremont St., allegedly damaged the restaurant's door and broke glasses and other items.

Police responded to 61 Union Square, which is the address of El Potro, at about 12:15 a.m. on Feb. 7, the report says.

When they arrived, Rodriguez was sitting in the corner, and he refused to give his name to police, according to the report. When an officer approached him to conduct a search, Rodriguez allegedly struggled, and the officer handcuffed him.

Once Rodriguez was in handcuffs, the restaurant's manager told the officer Rodriguez had been in the restaurant and "out of nowhere he got up and tried to start a fight with the other customers."

Staff escorted Rodriguez out of the restaurant and locked the doors behind him, but he forced his way back in, damaging the door, according to the manager's account in the police report.

Once back inside, Rodriguez tried to start a fight with an employee and, in doing so, broke glasses and other items in the area, the report says.

Rodriguez was arrested and charged with destruction of property and breaking and entering. He was also arrested on warrants for assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Please remember that allegations contained in police reports do not indicate a conviction.
