Police: Man Knifed a Block From Union Square Police Station

Police found the alleged attacker with a bite mark on his chest.

A man in Union Square tried to run away from a knife-wielding attacker on July 4, but he suffered wounds to the chest, back, arm and abdomen before ducking into a store to escape the assailant, according to allegations in a police report.

The attack happened about a block from the city's police station at around 9:45 p.m., the report says.

When police arrived on the scene, the report says, they found the alleged attacker, Freddy Portillo, 33, with no known address, standing in front of 206 Washington St. without a shirt on and with a "a big bite mark in the center of his chest."

The victim was inside a store at 208 Washington St., "bleeding from several parts of his body," the report says.

The victim told police he was visiting a friend at 204 Washington St. when Portillo lunged at him with a knife, cutting him in the chest.

The victim said he began running toward the police station, but Portillo caught up with him and cut the victim in the back, the report says of the victim's account.

The two got into a scuffle, and Portillo sliced the victim in the arm and lower abdomen, "causing a major gash," the report says.

To escape, the victim bit his attacker in the chest, ran into a store and called police, according to the report.

It says the victim told police he had no relationship with the alleged assailant and didn't know why he was attacked.

However, police had an earlier encounter with Portillo that day, the report says.

It says Portillo had come to the police station at around 2:45 p.m. with a bloody nose, saying he'd been in a fight with his roommate.

He abruptly left the police station, saying he was going to take matters into his own hands, but officers met up with him outside the station, according to the report. It says officers found him with a machete, which they confiscated.
