A car reported stolen out of Medford is believed to have caused a four-car accident on Interstate 93 in Dorchester Monday after driving the wrong way on the highway, according to a statement from Massachusetts State Police.

As of 2 p.m., state police did not have information about potential injuries resulting from the four-car crash.

Police have identified the driver of the stolen vehicle as Richard S. Saunders, 48, who's last known address was in Reading. Saunders was taken to Boston Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries, the statement says.

According to state police, a trooper from the K9 section spotted a black Dodge Caravan, reported stolen in Medford, around Adams Street in Dorchester at 11:59 a.m. 

The trooper began a slow-speed pursuit of the vehicle, but the driver of the Caravan didn't stop and instead entered Morrissey Boulevard heading in the wrong direction, according the statement.

At that point, state police called off the pursuit but continued efforts to monitor where the vehicle was heading, the statement says.

The vehicle reportedly reached the Morrissey Boulevard rotary and then got on Interstate 93, heading south in the northbound lane.

State police believe the wrong-way driver was the cause of a four-car accident on the highway near Freeport Street. They believe the driver then exited the highway in the Neponset area and ditched the car.

Boston and state police found the Caravan abandoned in the Port Norfolk neighborhood of Dorchester, and they later found Saunders hiding under a vehicle on Taylor Street, the statement says.

Police took Saunders into custody, and he is also wanted by Reading Police on warrants related to similar charges, including possible wrong-way operation, according to the statement from state police.

Police believe Saunders was accompanied by a woman in the reportedly stolen car, and the woman has not yet been captured.
