Man Grabs Cabbie's Neck, Demands Cash, Says Police Report

A 51-year-old Medford man was unsuccessful in his robbery attempt, according to a police report.

A Medford man who was a passenger in a Green Cab tried to rob the cab driver by grabbing his neck and demanding cash, according to a Somerville police report.

According to the report, the cab picked up Peter McCafferty, 51, of 10 Windsor Rd., Medford, near Franklin and Pearl streets in Somerville shortly before 7 a.m. on Sunday.

On the ride to Medford, McCafferty allegedly asked the cab driver, "So did you make a lot of money today?" and the driver said he hadn't, the report says.

Then, at the intersection of Medford Street and Broadway, McCafferty allegedly reached around the seat, grabbed the driver's neck and demanded cash, according to the report.

After exchanging words, McCafferty left the cab and went down Medford Street into Medford, though the cab driver didn't give him any money, the report says.

The cabbie called police, and officers encountered McCafferty in Medford, according to the report. The victim identified the Medford man as the alleged robber, and at the Somerville police station, when police called the number Green Cab's dispatcher had on record for the fare, McCafferty's phone rang, the report says.

McCafferty was arrested and charged with unarmed robbery.

Please remember that allegations contained in police reports do not indicate a conviction.
