Man Fends Off Knife-Wielding Robber in Davis Square Parking Lot

The alleged incident occurred Friday morning in the Day Street parking lot across from Flatbread Company.

A man called police to the Day Street parking lot, across from Flatbread Company in Davis Square, at about 7:30 a.m. Friday after another man allegedly tried to rob him at knifepoint.

The man told police that he had just exited his car in the parking lot when another man approached him with a knife and demanded his car keys. The man said he refused the suspect’s demands, so the suspect then attempted to physically take the keys.

After a struggle, the man said he was able to push the suspect away and yell for help, which caused the suspect to flee. The man chased the suspect, before losing him on Cottage Avenue.

An officer soon located a man matching the suspect’s description behind the Citizen’s Bank on Elm Street. The alleged victim later identified this man as the suspect.

The suspect, Christopher McCann, 20, of 18 Kingston St., Somerville, was then arrested and charged with armed robbery, assault and battery and assault with a dangerous weapon. Police allegedly found a box cutter with McCann’s possessions.

Police also issued a warrant for McCann for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and destruction of property over $250, as McCann allegedly used a baseball bat to assault another man during a domestic incident the previous night.

Christopher is severely mentally impaired, a diagnosed schizophrenic, and unfortunately according to our laws he has the right to refuse treatment. We, his loving family, will never surrender and keep on trying like hell to get him the proper help that he needs. We are so sorry that he tried to hurt or rob a stranger and we hope that the person is alright. Five hospitalizations and we still do not have any real help. There is no Mental Health Care System! It is not broken, it just does not exist. In this great state of ours and across this land of the free our prisons are our mental health disposal bin. The other man he hurt was his own father.
