Man Arrested After Allegedly Stealing Cookie, Causing Scene at Sherman Cafe

A Malden man allegedly harassed patrons at the Union Square cafe on a Saturday afternoon.

A 30-year-old Malden man allegedly swore at customers sitting outside in Union Square before he walked inside, threatened to steal a cookie, stole a cookie and then ate it, according to a Somerville Police Department incident report.

According to the report, police responded to Sherman Cafe on April 21 at about 4:23 p.m.

When they got there, according to the report, patrons pointed to Matthew Rais of 152 Sylvan St., Malden, who was wearing khakis and a T-shirt that said, "That's him!" And eating a cookie.

According to the report, Rais ran into the street against a green light, causing drivers to slam on their brakes and honk; police tried to stop him, and he ultimately sat down in a traffic island, screaming obscenities and saying he took rat poison.

Police called emergency medical services to evaluate him, and they ultimately had to handcuff him, the report says.

After the commotion, police interviewed witnesses who said Rais had approached them when they sat on the bench outside the cafe. They told police he began harassing them, swearing at them and making threatening gestures, the report says.

When they went into the cafe to get away from him, he followed them in, and once inside he kept saying he was going to steal a cookie, according to the report.

Eventually, "he grabbed a cookie from the counter and began to eat it as he left the cafe without paying for it," the report says.

Police arrested Rais and charged him with resisting arrest, disturbing the peace, threatening to commit crime and larceny under $250.
