Firefighters Extinguish House Fire Near City Hall

The fire was not considered suspicious, according to Somerville's fire chief.

Update, 12:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 27, 2013: According to an email from Deputy Chief Charles Breen of the Somerville Fire Department, the three-story home had six apartments, and all of them were damaged in the fire, either by the fire itself or by smoke and water damage. Six residents were displaced by the fire, Breen said.

He said the cause of the fire, which started in the wall between the first and second floors, "is believed to be electrical in origin."

Amid falling snowflakes, firefighters put out fire Thursday afternoon at 10 Montrose St., near Somerville City Hall.

Firefighters responded to the home at around 2:30 p.m.

Somerville Fire Chief Kevin Kelleher said residents in the second floor apartment called the fire department when they discovered smoke in their apartment.

Firefighters discovered fire between the first and second floors of the home, and the fire extended up to the third floor, Kelleher said.

"We have no reason to believe it's suspicious," he said about the fire, though investigators were on the scene.

The American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts also responded to the fire. As of Thursday afternoon, neither Kelleher nor the Red Cross knew how many residents were displaced.

No one was injured in the incident, Kelleher said.

Members of the Cambridge Fire Department also responded to the two-alarm fire.
