Bulger Sentenced to 2 Life Terms, Plus 5 Years
He was also ordered to pay millions in restitution to victims' families.
James "Whitey" Bulger, the notorious Boston mobster convicted of murdering 11 people, was sentenced Thursday to two life terms in prison, plus five years, according to media reports.
At the sentencing, held at Boston's federal court, U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper told Bulger, "The scope, the callousness, the depravity of your crimes is almost unfathomable ... it was all about money," according to BostonHerald.com.
According to Boston.com, Bulger was also ordered to pay $19.5 million in restitution to his victims' families and forfeit $25.2 million to the government. The punishment is largely symbolic, Boston.com said, because law enforcement officials have not found that much money belonging to Bulger.
Bulger, 84, has 14 days to file a notice of appeal, BostonHerald.com reported.
A jury in August found Bulger was guilty of 11 murders, racketeering, conspiracy, money laundering and firearms charges.
